Supreme Court judge Justice DY Chandrachud tests Covid positive, recovering well

Supreme Court Justice Dhananjaya Yeshwant Chandrachud on Wednesday tested positive for Covid-19. One of his staff members had also contracted the virus earlier. However, reports suggests that Justice Chandrachud is recuperating well.

Justice Chandrachud, who is also chairing the Supreme Court E-committee, has been instrumental in ensuring that courts across the country function virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Justice D.Y. Chandrachud is currently heading the Bench which is hearing the suo motu cases concerning Covid-19 issues, including shortage of beds and oxygen, apart from black-marketing of life-saving drugs, such as Remdesivir.

On the morning of May 10, Justice Chandrachud held online hearing of suo motu matter related to ensuring availability of essential supplies and drugs and streamlining the modalities for vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, due to some technical difficulty, the Supreme Court had to adjourn all matters of Monday to Thursday.

There were some other matters listed before the apex court Bench led by Justice DY Chandrachud on Monday. The Court was to hear the petition filed by lawyer Vishal Tiwari, seeking directions to the Union of India and other authorities to initiate necessary guidelines and effective steps to adhere to the strict COVID-19 guidelines for the ongoing events like elections and Kumbh Mela. It was also postponed to Thursday, along with other various important matters.
